In ancient times,A minister was walking with the emperor, they saw a wild goose flying in the air. The minister said to the emperor, "I can make that bird fall by drawing a bow without actually shooting.” The Emperor smiled and said, "Can you really do that?” The minister seemed very confident. Shortly afterwards, the wild goose flew overhead. Then the minister drew his bow and made a loud noise. But the wild goose flew higher and higher. Then the goose flew for a while and fell to the ground. The emperor clapped his hands and said, "Wow, how excellent your archery is!". The minister said: "It had nothing to do with excellent archery. This goose had injury on its body." The emperor was even more surprised. He said: "the wild goose was in the high sky. How did you know it’s injured?" The minister said: "the goose flew very slowly and its cry was very sad. In my experience, it flew slowly because it had injuries. And its cry was very sad because it had been separated from the other geese for so long. This lonely goose was wounded and frightened, so when the goose heard the loud noise, it flew higher and faster. This action took it so much strength and also lacerated its old injury. In the end, the goose fell down.
The literal meaning of “惊弓之鸟” is a bird startled by the mere twang of bow, figuratively it’s used to describe a person who frightens easily, due to past experiences.
